Outdoor Elegance: Using Damask in Exterior Decor

As with interior decorating, there are a wide variety of manners in which damask can be incorporated into an outdoor living space. When an individual is choosing a damask fabric, or damask accessories, to be used in the outdoors, it would be most prudent to choose a damask fabric that is constructed from synthetic fibers. Traditional damask is constructed from silk, and because silk is a rather delicate material, it may unable to withstand the wear and tear of the outdoors. Synthetic fibers have been scientifically proven to be infinitely more tougher than silk fibers, and combined with the heavy thread count of damask, it is guaranteed to be a durable choice of fabric.

When it comes to decorating an outdoor living space, damask is generally incorporated in one of several ways. It may used as an upholstery fabric for outdoor furniture, such as wicker. It is also not uncommon to find outdoor rugs that are constructed of synthetic damask.

Damask is also used as an accent material through the use of throw pillows. Less commonly, damask may be used as the covering for a pergola or an outdoor tent. However, even synthetic fibers are not designed to withstand the elements of the outdoors unprotected. Therefore, this is not always a practical option for that particular purpose.

As aforementioned, damask, even synthetic damask, should be protected from direct sunlight in order to retain the luxurious appearance of its fabric. It should also be protected from rain as well. Damask fabric generally comes in botanical prints, floral prints, and intricate geometric patterns. Typically, although not always, floral damask prints are used to create a more formal atmosphere. However, if chosen carefully, floral damask prints may be an ideal method for setting off one’s outdoor garden.

Geometric patterns can be easily accented with throw pillows in bright colors that match the flowers in a person’s garden. Damask may also be incorporated into an outdoor living space in small manners, such as an outdoor lampshade or in the use of coasters. Damask may be used to trim outdoor candle holders or flower vases. A person’s creativity level and their monetary budget only limit the methods in which damask can be incorporated into an outdoor living space.
